Have you ever checked the range of your avalanche transceiver? If so, how frequently? Unfortunately, sometimes stuff happens. During a range check in our @aiare_official level 1 avalanche course last week we found that one transceiver was short in range that it acquired a signal. It functioned properly for our morning trailhead check and even performed a fine search flawlessly. But it’s range was about 1/2 of what it should be. We never would have known if we didn’t perform this simple test. Ple

TRANSCEIVER FUNCTION CHECK • Find a place away from conflicting transmitting devices. Turn all machines off, and gather together to perform the transceiver function check as a team. Stand in a half circle an arm’s length or more apart with the transceiver check-leader in the middle of the group. • POWER UP - Turn transceivers On. As they power on, each individual checks that their transceiver runs a self-check and the display reads normally. Note battery strength and report it aloud to the group

The rescue leader or someone tasked with the job should visually verify all rescuers switch their transceivers to search mode. A panicked rescuer who leaves their transceiver in transmit can confuse a search and cost the team valuable minutes. If you are traveling with a new or inexperienced team member, it’s worth double-checking their transceiver for them. The rescue leader should remind searchers to turn off cell phones, cameras, radios, and any other electronic devices (including electric gl

Avalanche Alliance on Instagram: "The transceiver searcher moves steadily along the snow surface until the numbers on the transceiver begin to go up. Mark this point in the snow and without rotating or turning the transceiver, move steadily backwards along the same line, noting the lowest number, but continuing until the numbers go up again. Next, the searcher should return to the point at which the transceiver displayed the lowest distance along that line. Again, without rotating or turning the

Avalanche Alliance on Instagram: "Avalanche rescue gear should be specifically confirmed and tested as part of the departure check. Each individual needs to have their own transceiver, probe and shovel, and needs to be wearing them on correctly. In addition to the transceiver, rescue shovels and probes must be worn on the rider, not stowed on the machine. Use the following routine to check transceiver function with your group. This process will demonstrate that each beacon is functioning properl

Avalanche Alliance on Instagram: "Every trip begins with a Departure Check. It is the global standard that at the trailhead or boundary gate, everyone in the group participates in a departure check. The check works most efficiently if the group designates one person to lead the check. This person starts by confirming that the group has a repair kit, first kit, rescue sled, communication device(s), and navigation tools. The leader should also ask each individual to double check they have their pe
